As far as I know – and please correct me if I am wrong – there are only two pipe shapes named after persons, one being the bing, after Bing Crosby and the other, of course, the oom paul, named after Stefanus Johannes Paulus Kruger.

Legend has it that Oom Paul’s doctor ordered him to cut down his smoking to one pipe a day. His solution? Get the biggest pipe possible.

Oom Paul might have approved of this pipe, because it is huge and, to top it all, it is carved from an indigenous South African wood.

It is not an easy pipe to carve, especially trying to get the draft-hole as low down in the bowl as possible. I did not want to make it smooth, but opted rather for a ‘weathered’ look, as perhaps might be achieved by many years of handling and fondling it.
