Ah, the hawk-bill (or donkey-nut, if the conversation is not too polite). Not an easy shape to carve – in fact, just plain difficult. Very little can be done on a lathe. Almost everything must be done by hand and eye.
Then there is the drilling. Perçage courbe (if the conversation is extremely polite and perhaps just a little pretentious) or just plain old curved drilling, seems to be the solution, but that brings with it a whole lot of new problems.
My example of this shape is on the smaller side, as hawk-bills tend to be somewhat bigger, which makes the drilling ever so slightly easier. The drilling is straight and the draw is very open, with a pipe cleaner easily passing.
